Todo podemos ser fabricantes
•The Web revolution is hitting the real world. “We are entering a new manufacturing age,” said Anderson. “I’ve been thinking about being analog and the world of manufacturing.”
•Manufacturing businesses are utilizing a lot of the techniques pioneered on the Web.
•Tools of production are being democratized. Exhibit A: 3D printers will now run you $750. Anderson has one in his basement. Laser cutters and circuit boards can all be designed in your basement using world class industrial technologies.
•If you want scale, a Chinese factory will work with you where ever you are. “I can click a button and make robots in a Chinese factory move,” said Anderson. “These factories want to work with smaller companies because there’s the flexibility to do so and higher margins. You have access to the same factory as Sony.”
•The list goes on. Anderson’s big point is that the barriers to manufacturing are falling away. In fact, we may all be manufacturers down the road. Consider it the long tail of physical stuff.

Fallar: la llave para hacer cosas
It goes without saying that you can't be successful if you don't do anything, but blogger Charlie Hoehn details how important failing and trying new things—even if it doesn't fit any set path—is to success.Checar el artículo completo aquí
Como usar un controlador de motores L293 (Puente H)
In the latest Make: Robot Build Newsletter, Matt Mets wrote a piece introducing motor controllers and linked to an ITP article on using an L293NE motor controller. In the Robot Build area of the MAKE Forums, Alan Kilian pointed us to this other excellent tutorial, Control Your Motors with L293D, on Let's Make Robots. It has very clear breadboard images and shows you, among other things, how to add a few capacitors to your circuit to smooth out the current.Make
Interesante artículo sobre como emprender un negocio
Kicking off our Maker Business series is this piece by Jeffrey McGrew, who along with his wife Jillian Northrup, and their trusty CNC machine named Frank, are a two-person (and a bot) design and fabrication juggernaut. From their design-build studio in Oakland, CA, they do custom interior design, furniture, and such artist wonders as the "Art Golf" course they've set up at Maker Faire. Here, Jeffrey shares some words of advice to those who may be thinking of going "Maker Pro." -- GarethMake
Como construir un motor en eje (hub motor)
Hub motors put the power inside of the wheel. [Teamtestbot] goes deep into the hows and whys of building these motors, from parts, to windings, to the math behind the power ratios. The working example puts an electric motor inside the rear wheel of a Razor scooter. Past projects used belts to transfer the work of the motor to the wheel of the scooter. By integrating the motor and the wheel you end up with a much cleaner looking product.Hack a day
ARM7 plataforma de protodipos de relativo bajo costo
Do you find that the capabilities of your current microcontrollers are holding you back when you try to take over the world? Moving up to ARM7 architecture will put your projects in the same arena with the iPod and the Nintendo DS.
The BlueBoard-lpc214x is a prototyping board with a lot to offer. It incorporates two RS232 connections, USB, VGA, SD card slot, piezo buzzer, JTAG, audio out, PS2 keyboard connector, and a 2-line character LCD. The processor is an NXP Semiconductor LPC2148 with 512KB of programming space and 32+8KB of ram. The board also includes a 256KB i2c eeprom. This is a lot of prototyping power, but the low purchase price knocks our socks off: $40.90! Sadly, shipping would cost us another $20.43 but that’s still a lot of functionality for around $60.
Sample code and schematic are available for download. All of the pins for the microcontroller have jumpers and there are rows for pin headers around the processors if you want to patch in your own hardware. We’ve seen other ARM boards that make use of pre-existing shields. We would love to see someone remove the processor and implement Arduino-like shields for different processors outside of the LPC214x series. Promo video after the break.

Un interesante artículo sobre marketing
A pesar de que odio las "ciencias" económico administrativas, este artículo en particular me parece muy interesante por el acercamiento que toma con respecto al movimiento DIY y otras linduras.

- Browse Innovative Millennial-Created & Supported Sites: Millennials are inherently aligned with technology. Intimacy with the digital world is one of the greatest strengths of their generation. Never having known a world without digital technology, Millennials are the first “digital natives” and experience the world in a completely different way than previous generations. They recognize the power and importance of social networks and utilize the Internet as a trusted information source and a platform for self-expression. In the eyes of the Millennials, personal online networks hold as much importance and authority as any conventional media channel.
- Experience the DIY Movement: Millennials are masters of customization and self-expression. Encouraged to express their opinions from the time they were children, Millennials are highly vocal about their needs and desires. They see themselves as co-creators and shop independent artists and sellers on Etsy.com. See for yourself, take a hip craft/sewing class at an urban sewing shop; read MAKE magazine and attend one of their events. For Millennials, everything is about “real” and “reality” and their knowledge and information empowers them.
- Shop at Millennial-Approved Retailers: Overrun with choice, suspicious and non-responsive to advertising, Millennials see brands as their own. Irreverent, ironic duds (http://www.bustedtees.com), user-created limited-edition shirts for the masses (http://www.threadless.com), and simple, and ethically-produced pieces (American Apparel) speak louder for Millennials than any “branded” tee or top. Transparency and building smaller brands are key for earning the trust of Millennials. Marketers should build marketing programs whose goals are more short-term and cyclical in nature and plan for shorter product life cycles.
- Eat Like a Millennial: As master re-mixers, Millennials use grocery retail as a reimagined food court, sampling a variety of flavors and brands daily. Brand is much less important than categorical ethnic flavors. Millennials turn to “real” food over more processed snacks and ditch the Lean Pocket and head to the streets (for delectable street food, that is). To Millennials, snacking is all about experimentation. They are ironically playful in their snack selections, resulting in impulsive purchases from limited-release flavor combinations (Doritos Mystery Flavor) to global flavor profiles (Thai chili and kaffir lime). Millennials will continue to seek esoteric global taste profiles and will tire quickly of mundane or outdated menu options.
- See What Other Brands have Done to Win the Millennials’ Trust: In the end, it’s not about the brand itself. Brands must reinvent themselves in innovative ways to gain attention from Millennials like Target with its limited-edition clothing runs. Millennials are also attracted by brands like H&M offering cheap duds by exceptional designers at classic never-fail prices. Millennials are a brand-averse generation that is resistant to most conventional forms of marketing. We see these developments as part of a longer-term trajectory of cultural change which holds that consumers are increasingly brand-averse and skeptical to conventional forms of marketing. Conventional marketing as we know it must transform itself—perhaps quite radically—if it wishes to prove effective in the years to come.

Conectar un acelerometro a un PIC
Accelerometers make for nice user interaction, that’s why every Apple product seems to have one included and the Nintendo Wii is still alive despite its underpowered graphics capabilities. Adding one to your project is pretty simple, just a matter of reading in analog data and interpreting it according to the datasheet. If you’re just starting out, here’s a tutorial on how to interface an accelerometer with a PIC microcontroller. They’re using an ADXL320 which can be acquired on a breakout board for about $30. The schematic and code are simple so even if you don’t intend to build the circuit (or want to use a different uC), this is easy to understand as an academic exercise.Hack a day

Convierte tu auto en un Tanque
If wheels aren’t your thing you should really consider this tank-tread retrofit. It comes with two ramps so that you can drive your car up onto the tread platform. At first we thought this worked by chaining the vehicle’s frame to the tread frame and transferring power through a tread-mill interface. That’s not the case, it seems the transmission needs to be disconnected from the wheels and joined with the tank mechanics.
